The Year of Living Dangerously” is an exotic, fast-paced romantic thriller, filmed amid the tropical winds and political turmoil of a topping third world regime.
The place: Jakarta, Indonesia, where the desperate dictator Sukarno is trying a last minute power play, and foreign correspondents are scrambling to get on top of the story.
The time: the summer of 65’ and the living is dangerous indeed.
Mel Gibson stars as Guy Hamilton, an ambitious Australian reporter determined to make a name for himself on his first overseas assignment. In an atmosphere rife with intrigue and violence, Hamilton is befriended by Billy Kwan, a news cameraman who happens to be a Chinese-Australian dwarf with a giant sized heart and connections in high places.
Billy, as played by Linda Hunt, is one of the truly vivid performances of movie memory. Through him, Hamilton gains access to the rebel leaders and insight into the grim realities of Jakarta – the story of a city in torment that Hamilton is thus unable to tell the world.
Also through Billy, Hamilton meets Jill Bryant, a glamorous British Embassy attaché, played by the dazzling Sigourney Weaver. The two begin a fiery romance, intensified by the terrifying uncertainties of life in a country where nothing is as it seems.
