Russell Lawson (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is a defense attorney who loses his license when he is so disgusted by his guilty client Thurman Parks (Eric Stolz) that he loses it part way through a trial. He retreats to Florida to lick his wounds and falls back on his desire to be a writer while running fishing charters, until he meets an old oddball who has written a mystery novel about a series of murders. The real author dies and Lawson decides to pass off the book as his own, and it is successful. The trouble with his stolen success is that the mysteries were not fiction and since he is believed to be the author, he is accused of committing the crimes in real life. He must dodge arrest by the cop on the case, Clifford Dubose (Tom Berenger) as he tries to solve the case and prove his innocence, but he finds he must even prove the mysterious real writer even existed.
